Welcome to Tin Nguyen, who will be curating Commercial Break for Recess’s channel from April 1 – June 30, 2015.

We welcome our new participant SOMA from Mexico City to our project!  Curated by Kristin Reger, videos from SOMA will revolve around the theme La incorporeidad.

How do artists represent the otherworldly? Can we express an exteriority to the body, through the body? These questions and infinite others regarding incorporeality often lead to working with video. Video has the plasticity to approximate representations of incorporeality, be it through documenting experimental performance to creating fantastic animations. This series seeks to exhibit work in the Mexico City community of SOMA on the topic of incorporeality.

Kristin Reger & Gella Zefira, Orb/Orbe 1, 2015. Curated as part of SOMA’s program La incorporeidad.

An amorphous figure moves about the landscape. This figure is faceless, transformative, incorporeal. It blinks from one site to another, changing color and form. Its otherworldliness harkens upon the centuries of ritual and legend incited by the very sites it graces. Short scenes weave a non-linear montage and a sense of the supernatural, as does the film’s eerie soundscape and the sheer majesty of the sites’ cinematic transmission. The orb serves as a symbol of the intersection between old and new.  It is a poetic alien interrupting the space.
Orb/Orbe 1 is on display at Casa Maauad May 14 – June 26, 2015.

___

Part of Incorporeidad / Incorporeality curated by Kristin Reger (SOMA).

S.E.V. (Sigo Estando Vivo). 1′ 20”.  Daniela Bojórquez Vértiz 2014.

S.E.V. (Sigo Estando Vivo) takes its title from a Lev Tolstoi´s sentence (“I am still alive”) that he used to write repeatedly in his personal diaries: he was surprised by staying alive in a world full of violence. The images in this video come from the lights of police cars at night in Mexico City, and they are converted into their photographic negative form. The sound is derived from the mechanism that makes police lights turn.

THE APPLY (LA POSTULACIÓN) by Nicolás Eduardo Astorga Hering.  Part of Incorporeidad / Incorporeality curated by Kristin Reger (SOMA).

Video originally spoken in English, recorded reading a teleprompter (right channel), translated into Spanish by the company International Doblajes DINT.

After I applied to a Reality Show in Chile and realized I had not been selected, I applied for SOMA. The piece comes from the test video for Reality Show and the Skype interview for the Studies Program. The character in fact presents an ambiguous identity, a manipulation on the idea of presenting oneself, depending on the language and cultural behaviors, channeled by aspirational personification on the video. It examines disembodiment in relation to identity as something that is not constant, that may be deeply in crisis, while the territory to which it belongs imposes a crack in structure – poor memory.

“History is the passion of daughters seeking to interview their mothers.”
Over fifty years ago in the United States, thirteen female pilots were tested to see if they were capable of going into space as astronauts. The program was cancelled prematurely, but this medical experiment became a call for two of them, Jerrie Cobb and Janey Hart, to petition for a Congressional Hearing in an attempt to change the requirements so that women could become astronauts alongside their male counterparts. The Youngest (Hương Ngô and Or Zubalsky) took this act of resistance as a departure point for their album and film, “Shadows Making Shadows.” These videos, which combine appropriated period footage with newly shot 8mm film and digital video, serve as a love letter to these thirteen women and a contemporary reflection on systems that exclude specific bodies from representing our future.

In November 1968, the Manhattan restaurant chain Schrafft’s hired Andy Warhol to create a television commercial, hoping to make itself look more hip and relevant. Warhol created a one minute long commercial, promoting Schrafft’s new “Underground Sundae,” which Schrafft’s described as, “Yummy Schrafft’s vanilla ice cream in two groovy heaps, with three ounces of mind-blowing chocolate sauce undulating within a mountain of pure whipped cream topped with a pulsating maraschino cherry served in a bowl as big as a boat.”
